Deadly Drone Attack in El-Obeid Leaves 10 Dead, Medical Source Says

PORT SUDAN, Sudan: A medical source told AFP that a drone strike on the Sudanese city of El-Obeid killed ten persons, seven of them were children. According to an eyewitness, the strike struck a house in the center of North Kordofan, the army-controlled capital that rival paramilitary Rapid Support Forces have been attempting to encircle for months.

Sudan has been besieged by a conflict between the army and the RSF since April 2023, with some of the heaviest fighting taking place in the country’s important southern Kordofan area. El-Obeid, the region’s principal city, is located at a critical crossroads connecting the capital Khartoum to the vast western Darfur region, where the army lost its final significant stronghold in October.

Following its triumph in Darfur, the RSF has advanced into Kordofan, attempting to retake Sudan’s central corridor and tightening its siege alongside local allies around numerous army-held cities.

Hundreds of thousands of people face mass famine throughout the region. Last year, the army broke a paramilitary siege of El-Obeid, which the RSF has attempted to encircle since. Drone strikes on Sunday caused a power outage in the city, with no reports of injuries.
