Eight Maoist Militants Are Killed by Indian Soldiers

India’s Raipur: As security forces step their efforts to end the protracted fight, Indian commandos killed at least eight Maoist militants on Saturday in the thick woods of central India. The rebels, who claim to be fighting for the rights of marginalised Indigenous people, have been at war for decades, killing over 10,000 people. The battle started early on Saturday in the wooded regions of the Bijapur district in Chhattisgarh, which is regarded as the insurgency’s core.

Top police officer Sundarraj P. told AFP that eight Maoists’ remains had been found in the Bijapur district’s jungles today following a bloody gunfight. He stated that guns and a grenade launcher were among the weapons found among the rebels, and that a search was still underway.

According to government estimates, 287 insurgents have been murdered in the last year as a result of a security forces crackdown, with Chhattisgarh accounting for the vast majority of these deaths. India’s home minister, Amit Shah, stated last year that the administration anticipated putting an end to the uprising by 2026.

The Maoists want locals to have access to land, jobs, and a portion of the region’s abundant natural resources. Up until the early 2000s, the movement grew in size and strength as they established themselves in several isolated settlements in both the east and south of India. Tens of thousands of soldiers were then stationed in what is described as the “Red Corridor” by New Delhi.
