Europe is Experiencing Scorching Temperatures, with Certain areas on High Alert

ANKARA: As a persistent heat wave that has scorched parts of Europe prompted officials to issue warnings and encourage travellers to find ways to avoid the heat on Monday, forest fires fuelled by strong winds and hot, dry weather destroyed several vacation houses in Turkiye.

While data from European forecasters indicated that other nations were expected to broil more in the following days, a heat dome hung over an arc spanning France, Portugal, and Spain to Turkiye. Before rain is predicted to provide some places with reprieve later this week, new highs are anticipated on Wednesday.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres tweeted from Seville, Spain, where temperatures were predicted to reach 42 Celsius (almost 108 Fahrenheit) on Monday afternoon, that “extreme heat is no longer a rare event — it has become the new normal. The planet is getting hotter & more dangerous — no country is immune,” Guterres continued, echoing his repeated pleas for action to combat climate change.

Local and national authorities were making exceptional efforts to care for the elderly, the homeless, and those working outside in France, where the temperature on Monday was nearly unbearable and air conditioning is still comparatively uncommon.
