Gaza and the Palestinian Future: Key Focus at the Upcoming UN Gathering

Gaza and the Palestinian Future: Key Focus at the Upcoming UN Gathering

More than 140 world leaders are set to arrive in New York next week for the annual United Nations General Assembly summit, where the ongoing crisis in Gaza and the future of the Palestinians will dominate discussions.

Absent from the gathering will be Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas, after Washington denied US visas to him and his delegation.

The debate comes two years after Israel launched a major offensive in Gaza, following the unprecedented Hamas attack of October 7, 2023. Since then, the densely populated Palestinian enclave has been gripped by a devastating humanitarian crisis that will take center stage at the high-level event.

The summit, beginning Monday, will feature special sessions on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Saudi Arabia and France will co-chair meetings focused on reviving the two-state solution, aimed at establishing an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel.

Momentum for such recognition has built in recent weeks. Just last week, the UN General Assembly overwhelmingly approved a resolution supporting a future Palestinian state  excluding Hamas. Analysts expect this summit to pave the way for formal recognition by several countries, including France.
