GAZA CITY, Palestinian Territories: Ibrahim Farahat found himself directly on the dangerous demarcation line signifying the evacuation of Israeli troops when he woke up in Gaza City and saw a big yellow concrete block on his porch.
AFP was informed by a number of residents of the Shujaiya area, east of Gaza City, that they had discovered such blocks surrounding their residences. They thought that Israeli forces had placed them overnight between Thursday and Friday. The yellow block was put in front of our house.” It used to be next to the Al-Aqsa pharmacy, roughly a kilometre (less than a mile) away, Farahat told AFP.
Israeli forces have retreated to positions beyond the so-called Yellow Line as part of the US-brokered ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, but they still hold more than half of the region. Numerous fatal instances involving Israeli forces firing on individuals approaching or crossing the Yellow Line have occurred since the precarious truce went into effect on October 10. Since the war began more than two years ago, many Shujaiya residents have finally decided to leave the community.
