Google executives are under fire from employees over the company’s ties to the federal government’s crackdown on immigration enforcement, which has recently become violent and deadly. In an open letter published on Friday, over 900 full-time Google employees sought greater transparency about how the company’s technology is being used within the US government. Google has partnerships with federal agencies to provide cloud services and to support work on federal immigration enforcement.
In a conversation after the letter was released, a seven-year Google employee said he found it “mind-boggling” that the company was still working with immigration enforcement agencies. The petition from Google employees follows a previous letter published two weeks ago and signed by hundreds of employees from other firms, including Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta, asking on all internet companies to halt their support for the government immigration crackdown.
Over the last year, the Trump administration has increased its campaign to forcefully remove immigrants, sending armed agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) into many cities.
