RIYADH: The Green East initiative, a scheme aimed at increasing vegetation cover and halting desertification throughout the region, was recently launched by Eastern Province Governor Prince Saud bin Naif bin Abdulaziz. As part of Saudi Arabia’s Green Initiative, the governor also established the Eastern Province Afforestation Office, which will coordinate efforts to reach national environmental sustainability targets.
The program is in line with larger initiatives to restore land, boost biodiversity, and improve quality of life, according to Yousef Al-Badr, director-general of the Eastern Province branch of the National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification. He underlined that the project incorporates long-term mitigating techniques for desertification in addition to tree planting.
Four memorandums of understanding to further the Green East program were signed in front of Prince Saud. The agreements include cooperation with Imam Abdulrahman bin Faisal University for research on sustainable land management and partnerships with the Eastern Province Municipality to include green spaces into urban development. Other signatories include the Friends of the Environment Society, which will spearhead public awareness efforts, and the Eastern Province Council for Social Responsibility, which is responsible for coordinating community engagement.
