COPENHAGEN, Denmark: Red baseball caps like Donald Trump’s iconic MAGA hats have become a symbol of Danish and Greenlandic opposition to the US president’s threat to grab the frozen country. The caps stating “Make America Go Away,” a parody of Trump’s “Make America Great Again” slogan, have grown in popularity, as have other variants on social media and at public rallies, including a weekend demonstration in the Danish capital under frigid temperatures.
European governments are rallying behind Denmark, emphasizing the need to protect Arctic regions and warning that threats to Greenland jeopardize Western security. Jesper Rabe Tonnesen, the owner of a vintage clothing boutique in Copenhagen, made the imitation hats. Early batches faltered last year, but the Trump administration lately intensified its rhetoric on Greenland. They are now cropping up everywhere.
When a delegation from America went up to Greenland, we started to realize this probably wasn’t a joke it’s not reality TV, it’s actually reality,” said Tonnesen, a 58-year-old woman. “So I said, okay, what can I do?”Can I communicate in a humorous manner with a positive message and unite the Danes to demonstrate that Danish people support the people of Greenland?” Demand exploded from a trickle to a sellout in the span of one weekend. Tonnesen stated that he has now bought “several thousand”.
