Hollywood-Style Independence Day Celebrations at The US Embassy in Dhahran

DHAHRAN: To commemorate the 249th anniversary of the writing of the Declaration of Independence, the US Consulate in Dhahran had an early celebration this week. Popcorn stands, movie posters, cutouts of iconic movie personalities, and imitation Oscar statues were all part of the outdoor event’s Hollywood-themed theme. “When we think about the fabric of American culture, few institutions have shaped our collective identity quite like Hollywood,” remarked US Consul General James Sindle, welcoming the guests. This “dream factory” has been entertaining us and expressing our national ideals, hardships, and aspirations for more than a century.

“A bold statement that reimagined governance and set a standard for liberty,” he said of the Declaration of Independence. Additionally, Sindle endorsed the next 11th Saudi Film Festival in Dhahran. The festival’s exploration of the topic “cinema of identity” serves as a reminder that everyone uses narrative to try to understand themselves. It manifests in distinctively cultural ways,” he stated.

Sindle discussed the significance of the occasion and the value of including members of the Saudi community in an interview with Arab News after cutting the celebratory cake. He claimed that many Saudis, like people everywhere else, grew up watching Hollywood films. Film narratives have the ability to elicit discussion, span cultural boundaries, and unite people.
