DUBAI: Children in the besieged enclave continue to suffer from a worsening humanitarian crisis two months after the precarious ceasefire in Gaza. Aid organizations have warned that Israel’s ongoing limitations on relief supplies are putting the populace at risk for sickness and hunger.
Humanitarian organizations claim that despite the truce on October 10, convoys bringing vital aid are still stranded at border crossings. In the meantime, thousands of families who have been uprooted by two years of conflict are now living in cramped shelters under intense rain, which increases the danger of illness.
Medical facilities are experiencing “critical shortages” of materials required to address postwar health issues, according to the UK-based charity Medical Aid for Palestinians, which has recorded an increase in child malnutrition cases.
MAP’s director of advocacy and campaigns, Rohan Talbot, told Arab News that although the number of severely malnourished patients has declined since the famine’s peak, cases continue to often show up in hospital emergency rooms and medical facilities.
Of the 7,930 children evaluated in November, the organization’s nutrition cluster identified 575 with acute malnutrition, including 128 with severe malnutrition. Nearly 10% of children screened in Gaza City had malnutrition, which was the highest incidence.
