How KAUST in Saudi Arabia is Expanding the Potential of Generative Artificial Intelligence

In line with the Kingdom’s Research Development and Innovation Authority’s Vision 2030, the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in Saudi Arabia is stepping up its generative AI research and development to compete in the global AI race.

“Generative artificial intelligence, or GenAI, has already begun to revolutionize every facet of our society. According to Bernard Ghanem, chair of KAUST’s Center of Excellence in Generative AI, “it will be central to the future development of (Saudi Arabia), with a plethora of applications in health care, industry, energy, sustainability and entertainment, among many others.”

The Center of Excellence (CoE) on Generative AI at KAUST was officially opened on July 1. Its mission is to become the world’s leading center for generative AI research, development, and innovation, with a focus on solving the most important problems facing both the Kingdom and the rest of the world.

“The KAUST GenAI CoE will expand the boundaries of what can be achieved with GenAI, concerning its technological prowess, practical uses, and tangible effects,” stated Ghanem.

“We anticipate that the CoE will significantly contribute to the acceleration of the GenAI landscape in the Kingdom and globally, resulting in a boom of novel models with practical applications in the four national priority R&D domains that the Kingdom has designated.”
