How the Iran Airspace Closure Affects Global Flights and Airlines

WASHINGTON: According to a notification posted on the Federal Aviation Administration’s website, Iran temporarily restricted its airspace to all aircraft, with the exception of international ones to and from Iran with official approval, at 5:15 p.m. ET on Wednesday.

The warning stated that the ban could be prolonged, but it is scheduled to last for more than two hours until 7:30 p.m. ET, or 0030 GMT. Following a senior Iranian official’s claim that Tehran had warned its neighbors that it would attack American sites in the event of a strike by Washington, a US official announced on Wednesday that the US was removing some people from bases in the Middle East.

Airline transportation is highly vulnerable to missile and drone attacks in an increasing number of conflict areas. Iran’s abrupt airspace restriction would affect some of its overseas flights, according to IndiGo, the biggest airline in India. Tracking information from Flightradar24 shows that a Russian Aeroflot airplane headed for Tehran returned to Moscow following the closure.

Shortly after Lufthansa reorganized its flight operations around the Middle East due to rising tensions in the region, Germany issued a new directive earlier on Wednesday warning the nation’s airlines not to enter Iranian airspace.
