JEDDAH: Calotropis procera, or ushar in Arabic, is a hardy shrub that grows all over Saudi Arabia. It is sometimes described as poisonous and grows in disturbed areas, roadsides, deserts, and open spaces. The species, which is native to the Arabian Peninsula and the broader Afro-Asian dry belt stretching from tropical and northern Africa through the Middle East to South Asia, is highly adapted to harsh environmental conditions. Strong sunlight, protracted drought, extreme heat, and frequent soil disturbance are all favorable conditions for it.
Warm lowlands, plains, wadi systems, and agricultural margins are common habitats for the plant because of the ideal conditions created by exposed soils and water runoff. Its thick, felt-like leaves, which give it the moniker “felt plant,” help retain moisture while shielding the plant from UV rays and wind harm.
Calotropis procera is an evergreen plant with remarkable perseverance. It may resprout after disturbance thanks to its robust root structure, which promotes long-term establishment in challenging conditions. In the past, this floss has been used as a soft stuffing material. The plant produces inflated pods that carry many silky-tufted seeds that are easily disseminated by wind.
