How Pro-Iran Groups Use AI to Troll Donald Trump and Shape War Narratives

Pro-Iran groups have utilized artificial intelligence to produce sleek English-language online memes in an attempt to alter the narrative during the battle against the United States and Israel and foster dissent.

Analysts believe the memes are being distributed by groups affiliated to the Iranian government as part of a campaign to use its limited resources to wreak damage on the United States, even indirectly. This includes Iran’s use of attacks and threats to control trade via the Strait of Hormuz and retain its stranglehold on the global economy. A ceasefire on Wednesday raised expectations of putting an end to hostilities, but many issues remained unresolved.

Neil Lavie-Driver, an AI researcher at the University of Cambridge, referred to Iran as the target of this propaganda campaign. “Their goal is to generate enough unhappiness with the battle to eventually drive the West to give in, therefore it is really crucial to them.

It’s not the first time memes have been used in a fight, and they’ve expanded to include AI graphics in recent years. AI imagery assaulted Ukrainians following the Russian invasion in 2022. Last year, the phrase “AI slop” was widely used to characterize the abundance of defective photographs provided online during the Israel-Iran war in an attempt to undermine Iran’s nuclear program.
