Iran’s Unrest Continues: What the Top Judge’s Warning Signals About the Regime’s Next Move

DUBAI: Iran’s top judge accused Israel and the US of employing hybrid tactics to destabilize the nation while warning demonstrators on Wednesday that there would be “no leniency for those who help the enemy against the Islamic Republic.

Shopkeepers in Tehran’s Grand Bazaar started the current protests last month, denouncing the currency’s wild slide. This is the largest wave of unrest in three years. Since then, anxiety about economic hardships, including skyrocketing inflation caused by mismanagement and Western sanctions, as well as restrictions on political and social freedoms, has spread across the country.

Chief Justice Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei, the head of Iran’s judiciary, was quoted by state media as saying, “There is no excuse for those coming to the streets for riots and unrest following announcements by Israel and the US president.

Ejei declared, “There will be no leniency going forward for anyone who aids the enemy against the Islamic Republic and the peace of the people.” Iranian officials have reported that at least two members of the security forces have died and over a dozen have been injured, but they have not provided a death toll for demonstrators. The most violent protests have taken place in Iran’s western provinces.
