JERUSALEM/BEIRUT: In response to Hezbollah’s first missile barrage since the start of joint US-Israeli operations against Iran, the Israeli military began a wave of airstrikes against the group’s bases around Lebanon on Monday, signalling a dramatic escalation. Soon after the Israeli military (IDF) reported several rockets crossing from Lebanese territory, explosions shook the southern suburbs of Beirut, a renowned Hezbollah stronghold.
The engagement ruptured the relative calm that had been maintained since a ceasefire mediated by the United States in 2024, even though Israeli air defences intercepted at least one projectile, and others fell in open regions.
The Israeli military retaliated with a series of strikes throughout Lebanon after Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam denounced the rocket fire directed at Israel. Whoever is responsible, the rocket fire from southern Lebanon is a careless and suspicious act that puts Lebanon’s safety and security in jeopardy and provides Israel with justifications to keep attacking it,” Salam posted on X.
In retaliation for the pure blood of Ayatollah Imam Sayyid Ali Al-Husseini Khamenei and in defense of Lebanon and its people, and in response to the repeated Israeli attacks,” the organization stated in a statement, launching “a barrage of missiles and a swarm of drones” against Israel.
