Maj. Gen. Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi, who was Israel’s top military lawyer until last week, is now in custody amid a scandal shaking the nation. The controversy began after she admitted to leaking a surveillance video that captured Israeli soldiers allegedly sexually abusing a Palestinian detainee at the Sde Teiman military prison. Tomer-Yerushalmi revealed she authorized the leak last year to highlight the severity of the abuse under investigation, but this sparked fierce backlash from hard-line political leaders.
Following intense pressure, she resigned abruptly and then went missing, leaving a cryptic note for her family and abandoning her car near a beach north of Tel Aviv. This triggered an extensive search involving military drones. She was found alive on a Tel Aviv beach Sunday night, but was soon taken into custody along with the former chief military prosecutor in connection to the leak case.
Despite her explanation that the leak was intended to expose serious misconduct, Tomer-Yerushalmi has faced harsh public and political criticism, including accusations of staging a suicide attempt to destroy evidence after one of her phones disappeared. Right-wing commentators have launched severe personal attacks against her, deepening political divisions in Israel as highly charged legal proceedings continue.
