A Glimpse Of Bruno’s Journey

To learn about the advent of Bruno Scarselli’s professional journey, we asked, “Can you walk us through your professional journey and how it led to where you are today?”

Bruno responded, “I was born in a family of jewelers and as a 3-generation member, I had the pleasure to learn my vocation at a very early age. While my family conducted two types of business in Italy during the winter months my father and mother traveled to every point of origin to buy diamonds, rubies, green emeralds, and sapphires to then assemble beautifully appointed jewelry; and during the summer months they would operate retail stores. 

It was during the summer that since the age of 8 I was allowed to set the window displays and or clean the windows of those fingerprints. I spend endless hours observing my folks dazzle their clients with well-appointed jewelry talks of family, birthdays, and so on.  Every client knew both my parents and many adored playing with me.   

My parents would reword my time spent helping with very small diamonds, 0.01 ct, also known as pointers, and as the summer months would near an end I would give back my little parcel of diamonds for a single bigger diamond.”

While challenging phases are an inevitable part of every business, it is crucial to overcome them efficiently. To learn how Bruno Scarselli handles these situations, we asked, “Reflecting on your career, what have been some of the most significant challenges you’ve faced, and how did you overcome them?”

Bruno Scarselli shared, “I have had a great upbringing both from a family and a career and my challenges have been mostly associated with moments in my life where I had to make a full turnaround in a direction which was uncomfortable rather than not. I have always believed that with family qualities and a strong foundation within my family, I could do anything I set my mind to.

Luckily, for me everything I have done in my business career I always took home the best of it. From closing real estate deals of $20 million in 1987 (wall Street crash) to several $100 million; or when I learned to cut diamonds at the age of 15. My father’s mentoring has allowed me to embrace challenges head-on and shape a strong inner personality.”

Eager to learn about the approach followed by Bruno Scarselli in maintaining a balance between the visions and operational requirements of his business, we asked, “How do you balance long-term vision with short-term operational needs?”

Bruno Scarselli replied, “I believe I have a gift of a sort of innate quality which follows me everywhere I apply myself. Deep knowledge of the marketplace, allows me to sense the trends being formulated well ahead of the moment in which the trend comes to be; and the ability to capitalize on those steps is also a quality trade acquired from within; this is to say my long or short-term vision merge within myself in an uncomplicated manner.”

We further asked, “Tell us more about your services and if you are planning to add something new in the future.”

Bruno Scarselli continued, “Scarselli Diamonds is one of few natural color diamond manufacturers with a collection of diamonds displayed at the American Museum of Natural History, this attests to the quality of our product.  We are vertically integrated which means we buy a rough diamond which we manufacture into polished diamonds; we design our jewelry and commission the making of our pieces whereas, in the past few years, our price point originated around $350,000; we are now adding a product line which will introduce a price range of $15,000 to $60,000.

To ensure long-term success for a business, it is crucial to analyze and adopt the right market developments for business. We asked, “What methods do you use to analyze market trends, and how have these influenced your business decisions?”

Bruno Scarselli shared, “Our company has offices in New York, Hong Kong, Shanghai, and most recently Kimberley, South Africa. The ability to be part of large markets across a variety of cities allows us to have a pulse in different markets. 

For example, our New York office oversees the diamond manufacturing and jewelry making as well as the retail American markets, Hong Kong is mainly involved in selling merchandise in the South East Asian market; Shanghai on the other hand is a selling platform for the Chinese markets. The most recent office in South Africa is used to buy rough diamonds and it is also used to oversee our Traceability technology platform.”

We were intrigued to learn about the influence of fast-paced technological advancements in Bruno Scarselli’s business. So, we asked, “How has digital transformation affected your business model?”

Bruno Scarselli replied, “In the high-value product range, the digital world may help us find a client faster but in-person meetings are still the primary conduit to close sales.”

Offering a positive workspace and prioritizing satisfied employees is paramount for the success of any business. So, we asked, “What strategies do you implement to maintain high levels of employee engagement and satisfaction?”

Scarselli Diamonds is a family-owned business and as such it’s a tight group of people all thinking about the brand name and product credibility, we hold meetings keeping the focus on how best to introduce the next diamond ring or bracelet, we look for internal initiatives and we build on the team’s excitement and devotion to the company’s product line,” Bruno replied.
