In an effort to strengthen the alliance’s backing for Ukraine and their own defense and deterrent capabilities, NATO leaders convened in Washington on Wednesday for a summit working session.
Lower-level discussions on those matters have been ongoing for months, notably at a meeting of NATO foreign ministers earlier this year. However, it is now the leaders’ responsibility to achieve their final accords.
Wednesday ends with a social event at the White House where US President Joe Biden hosts allies of NATO for dinner.
“Autocrats want to overturn global order, which has, by and large, [been] kept for nearly 80 years and counting. Terrorist groups continue to plot evil schemes, to cause mayhem and chaos and suffering. In Europe, [Russian President Vladimir] Putin’s war of aggression against Ukraine continues.”
“And Putin wants nothing less – nothing less – than Ukraine’s total subjugation, to end Ukraine’s democracy, to destroy Ukraine’s culture and to wipe Ukraine off the map. And we know Putin won’t stop at Ukraine. But make no mistake: Ukraine can and will stop Putin,” Biden said.
The leaders in attendance, who were expected to finalize a proposal to combine current national efforts to support Ukraine’s military into a NATO-coordinated program to provide Ukrainian soldiers, erupted in wild applause at that line. Additionally, Biden and other NATO officials declared on Tuesday that they would be sending five more air defense systems to Ukraine.
