North Darfur Crisis Deepens: Dozens Dead and 8,000 Displaced Amid Escalating Clashes

New York City: The UN reported on Tuesday that fighting has escalated throughout Sudan, especially North Darfur, resulting in thousands of displaced people and at least dozens of civilian deaths. It also issued a warning about the deteriorating humanitarian and nutritional crises.

According to local sources, a ground attack in the Jirjir region of North Darfur on Monday may have killed at least 19 people, according to UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric. According to the Sudan Doctors Network, a drone assault on Sinja, the capital of Sennar State, resulted in ten civilian deaths and nine injuries.

According to estimates from the International Organization for Migration, about 8,000 people were displaced on Friday from North Darfur villages close to Kernoi. Some fled to other parts of the state, others crossed the border into Chad seeking sanctuary, further straining already delicate humanitarian situations, Dujarric said.

He stated that North Darfur’s nutritional crisis is getting worse as the displacements take place. In the communities surrounding Tina, Um Baru, and Kernoi, UNICEF and its partners conducted a survey last month that found acute malnutrition levels significantly above the World Health Organization’s 15 percent emergency threshold. Um Baru had the highest rate of acute malnutrition, at 53%.
