LONDON: The video, which was surreptitiously recorded by a bystander and published by Reuters with a warning about “graphic content,” is startling. Two individuals who had turned themselves in were summarily killed on November 27 by Israeli border police during a building raid in the Jenin camp in the West Bank. The deceased individuals were later identified by the Palestinian health ministry as Yusuf Asasa, 37, and Montasir Abdullah, 26.
As a UN Human Rights Office spokesperson noted in a statement following the Jenin killings, summary executions of Palestinians by Israeli security personnel are nothing new. We are horrified by the heinous murder of two Palestinian men in Jenin, the occupied West Bank, by Israeli border police yesterday, in yet another apparent summary execution,” he declared.
In January, Israel began Operation Iron Fist in Jenin, and in February, it was extended to the Tulkarem and Nur Shams camps. According to the military, it is going after armed organizations supported by Iran that had become more powerful in the camps and were attacking Israelis. The Israel Defense Forces have been accused of severe violence in a protracted military campaign that started as a series of targeted raids to destroy Palestinian armed organizations and defend Israeli settlements.
