Rafah Crossing to Reopen Partially After Israel’s Approval

Israel has agreed to a “limited reopening” of the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt, according to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office, following talks with US envoys in Jerusalem on Monday.

The crossing will reopen only for pedestrian movement at first, not for commercial traffic or large-scale aid convoys. It will also remain under full Israeli inspection and control.Israel has tied the opening to the completion of a search operation for the remains of the last Israeli hostage, Ran Gvili. Until his body is located and returned, reopening plans will remain on hold.

Netanyahu’s office reiterated that the move is part of US President Trump’s 20-point peace plan for Gaza, and depends on the return of all living hostages and confirmation that Hamas has made a full effort to account for all deceased captives.

The Rafah crossing is the main gateway between Gaza and the outside world. It has been closed since mid-2024 when Israeli forces took control of the Palestinian side during the conflict. Its reopening has been a central point in ceasefire talks, humanitarian discussions and regional diplomacy, as opening it would allow greater movement for civilians and potentially more access for aid in the future.
