Saudi cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Hani Najm has been named vice president of the prestigious American College of Cardiology (ACC), a role he will assume in March 2026. He is set to become the organization’s president later that year, making him one of only three surgeons to hold such a position in the ACC’s 75-year history.
Dr. Najm specializes in pediatric and congenital heart surgery and is known for pioneering surgical procedures that save the lives of infants and children. Notably, he developed a patented heart valve designed for infants that can expand as they grow, addressing a critical gap in treatment options for newborns with defective heart valves. He also performed a rare fetal surgery, successfully removing a tumor from a fetus in utero to prevent heart failure and allow the baby to be born healthy.
A product of Saudi Arabia’s education system and government support, Dr. Najm trained further in Canada and returned to Saudi Arabia to build the premier Pediatric Heart Center before joining the Cleveland Clinic in the US as chair of Pediatric and Adult Congenital Heart Surgery. He has conducted over 10,000 complex surgeries and holds numerous prestigious roles, including past president of the Saudi Heart Association and Editor-in-Chief of its journal.
