Sebastien Lecornu Returns as France’s PM After Macron’s Reappointment

French President Emmanuel Macron has reinstated Sebastien Lecornu as prime minister, just four days after Lecornu submitted his resignation. The decision came despite calls from both allies and opposition members for a fresh face to break months of political deadlock over a contentious austerity budget.

The president of the republic has nominated Mr. Sebastien Lecornu as prime minister and tasked him with forming a government,” the Elysee Palace announced on Friday. Lecornu, 39, had stepped down earlier in the week but accepted the reappointment out of duty, saying, We must end the political crisis.

France has been stuck in paralysis since Macron’s gamble on snap elections last year backfired, resulting in a hung parliament and more seats for the far right. Lecornu vowed to deliver a national budget by year-end and emphasized that restoring public finances is “a priority for our future.

Macron, facing his most severe domestic crisis since taking office in 2017, has yet to speak publicly about the decision. The reappointment has sparked strong reactions. Far-right leader Jordan Bardella called it a “bad joke and promised to push for an immediate vote to oust the new cabinet. The hard left dismissed the move as two fingers to the French people, accusing Macron of ignoring demands for change.
