Senate Blockade: How Trump’s Venezuela War Powers Went Unchecked

WASHINGTON: After two GOP senators changed their minds about the legislation, Senate Republicans voted on Wednesday to reject a war powers resolution that would have restricted President Donald Trump’s ability to launch more attacks on Venezuela.

Last week, Trump exerted tremendous pressure on five Republican senators who joined Democrats in advancing the resolution, finally succeeding in preventing the legislation from being passed. Under pressure, two Republicans, Sens. Todd Young of Indiana and Josh Hawley of Missouri, defected. The Senate was at a 50-50 impasse over a Republican motion to reject the bill, which Vice President JD Vance had to break.

The outcome of the high-profile vote indicated that Trump still controls a large portion of the Republican conference, but it also revealed that Capitol Hill is becoming increasingly concerned about the president’s ambitious foreign policy goals. Following US Marines’ unexpected nighttime incursion earlier this month that resulted in the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro, Democrats pushed the discussion. They manage to oppose one of the most successful attacks in history. It’s quite remarkable. And it’s unfortunate,” Trump remarked at a speech on Tuesday in Michigan.
