South Sudan: UN Records 35% Rise in Victims of Violence

South Sudan

According to recent findings from the United Nations, the number of individuals impacted by violence in South Sudan surged by 35 percent during the final quarter of 2023, primarily attributed to intercommunal conflict. The UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) documented a total of 233 violent incidents affecting 862 people, with staggering figures of casualties including fatalities, injuries, abductions, and instances of conflict-related sexual violence.

Intercommunal Conflict Takes Toll

Intercommunal violence, spearheaded by community-based militias or civil defense groups, accounted for a significant portion—86 percent—of all civilians affected by the unrest. Notably, retaliatory attacks stemming from a border dispute between rival factions of the Dinka ethnic group emerged as a focal point of conflict. The Twic Dinka from Warrap state and the Ngok Dinka from the oil-rich Abyei region found themselves embroiled in violent clashes, resulting in a devastating toll of lives lost and individuals injured.

South Sudan-Challenges Amidst Electoral Preparations

Amidst preparations for forthcoming elections in South Sudan, violence fueled by ethnic tensions and resource disputes has escalated, particularly in regions like Abyei. The impending electoral process, slated to occur later this year, marks a critical milestone following the 2018 peace agreement between President Salva Kiir Mayardit and former rival Riek Machar. However, the persistence of violence threatens to undermine progress made towards sustainable peace and stability in the nation.

UN Urges Government Intervention

Nicholas Haysom, the head of UNMISS, emphasized the urgent need for government intervention to address underlying grievances and foster reconciliation. With ethnic tensions and resource disputes exacerbating existing vulnerabilities, concerted efforts are required to mitigate the root causes of conflict and pave the way for lasting peace. The UN has conducted extensive peacekeeping patrols, employing various means of transportation, to monitor and mitigate instances of violence across the country.

Humanitarian Crisis Worsens

Beyond the immediate impact of violence, South Sudan grapples with a multifaceted humanitarian crisis compounded by factors such as drought, flooding, and economic instability. The World Food Programme underscores the dire situation, highlighting the plight of vulnerable populations facing food insecurity and displacement. Moreover, an influx of individuals fleeing conflict in neighboring Sudan adds to the strain on resources and infrastructure, exacerbating the humanitarian challenges faced by the nation.

A Call for International Support

In light of the escalating crisis, international support and solidarity are paramount to addressing the complex challenges confronting South Sudan. The UN’s continued engagement and advocacy for peace, coupled with efforts to deliver humanitarian aid and support sustainable development initiatives, remain essential in mitigating the impact of violence and fostering resilience within affected communities. As South Sudan navigates the path towards peace and stability, collaborative action at both national and international levels is imperative to ensure a brighter future for all its citizens.
