Sri Lanka Seeks to Draw Saudi Tourists in Order to Diversify its Visitor Base

COLOMBO: According to officials, Saudi Arabia is one of Sri Lanka’s top tourism destinations. The island country wants to increase the number of tourists from the Kingdom in order to broaden its traveller base.

As Sri Lanka recovers from the COVID-19 outbreak and its worst economic crisis in decades, the island nation’s tourism industry has started rebounding. The industry, which has historically been a major source of foreign reserves, attracted over 2 million visitors in 2024 and generated over $3 billion.

Sri Lankan officials aim to attract new tourists, particularly those from Saudi Arabia, and reduce their reliance on traditional tourist markets to further expand their hospitality industry.

Madusha Perera, assistant director for marketing at the Sri Lanka tourist Promotion Bureau, recently told Arab News that Sri Lanka has made Saudi Arabia a top priority in its tourist promotion efforts due to the country’s recognition of the enormous potential of the Saudi market.

The nation aims to capitalise on Saudi Arabia’s expanding outbound tourism industry, which has shown a growing interest in foreign destinations. Sri Lanka aims to lessen its reliance on conventional source markets and diversify its visitor base by concentrating on this sector.
