TOKYO: The Japan Meteorological Agency reported an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.2 in the western Chugoku area of Japan on Tuesday, followed by significant aftershocks. The first earthquake occurred in eastern Shimane prefecture, according to the agency. No tsunami was expected. Chugoku Electric Power operates the Shimane Nuclear Power Station, which is roughly 32 kilometers (20 miles) distant.
Japan’s Nuclear Regulation Authority confirmed there were no violations at the plant. Japan’s Atomic Energy Authority reported no anomalies at the plant. Earthquakes occur regularly in Japan, one of the world’s most active seismically active regions.
The utility is assessing the impact on the plant’s No.2 unit, which has been operational since December 2024 after being shut down following the March 2011 Fukushima tragedies. Japan, one of the world’s seismically active areas, experiences frequent earthquakes.
The earthquake had a seismic strength of upper-5 on Japan’s 1-7 scale, making unsupported movement impossible. West Japan Railway suspended Shinkansen bullet train service between Shin-Osaka and Hakata due to the earthquake.
