Sudanese Parties are Urged to Commit to the Jeddah Negotiations by the Saudi Deputy Foreign Minister

RIYADH: Saudi deputy foreign minister Waleed Al-Khuraiji attended the third session of Sudanese peace negotiations in Mauritania on Wednesday. Al-Khuraiji underlined Saudi Arabia’s efforts to resolve the ongoing violence between warring parties, which started in April 2023 and has since displaced thousands of people in Sudan, and reaffirmed Saudi Arabia’s commitment to the Sudanese people.

A short-term ceasefire deal and a pledge to protect civilians while restoring security and stability in Sudan were the outcomes of negotiations Saudi Arabia convened in Jeddah with Sudanese groups and the US one month after the conflict began. “The end of fighting and bolstering the humanitarian response of the Sudanese people is the first step towards resolving the Sudanese crisis,” stated Al-Khuraiji.

According to the Saudi Press Agency, he encouraged the warring factions in Sudan to uphold the Jeddah accord from May 2023, saying it is the cornerstone of Sudan’s political destiny, unity, and sovereignty.  Al-Khuraiji commended the Sudanese Armed Forces for expanding the opening of airports in Kassala, Ndola, and El-Obeid, as well as the Adre border crossing with Chad, which is utilized by aid organizations to deliver aid.
