Syria Confirms Daesh Prison Break as Kurdish Website Claims 1,500 Escaped

CAIRO: Syria’s Interior Ministry announced Tuesday that approximately 120 Daesh prisoners had broken out of Shaddadi prison. This came after the Kurdish website Rudaw revealed that Farhad Shami, a spokesman for the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, claimed that approximately 1,500 Daesh members had escaped.

According to the Syrian ministry, after the breakout, Syrian army units and ministry special forces moved into Shaddadi. It said security forces had recaptured 81 of the escapees after search and sweep operations in the town and surrounding ‍areas, with efforts ‍continuing to arrest the ‍remaining fugitives.

In the eastern city of Shaddadi, the Syrian army had earlier claimed that “a number of Daesh militants had broken out of a prison that had been controlled by the SDF and accused the SDF of letting them go. After the breakout, Syrian army troops and ministry special forces invaded Shaddadi, according to the Syrian government.

Following days of combat with government forces, the SDF decided on Sunday to leave both Raqqa and Deir Ezzor, two provinces with an Arab majority that they had ruled for years and that house Syria’s primary oil deposits.
