Syria Demands Global Protection Against Israeli Strikes at the UN

NEW YORK: Syria has urged the international community to safeguard its sovereignty from Israeli attacks, stating that the country is dedicated to upholding its international duties and rebuilding confidence after decades of rule by the deposed regime.

Syria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ibrahim Olabi, told the UN General Assembly on Friday that the government is working to restore stability, combat terrorism and drug smuggling, and collaborate with international organisations.

He criticised Israeli attacks on Syria, saying they went beyond violations and intrusions in the country’s south to include bombings on Syrian sites on the same day International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi arrived to examine the country’s nuclear situation.

Olabi stated that Syria was pursuing transparent collaboration with the IAEA and attempting to handle nuclear and chemical weapons challenges inherited from the deposed regime, but continuing to face Israeli actions that undermine its sovereignty and security.

He urged the international community to support Syria’s efforts and preserve international law, citing Friday’s anti-occupation demonstrations across the country. Olabi stated that the country’s new leadership has chosen to meet its international obligations and rebuild relations with international institutions, in contrast to the ousted regime, which he accused of using chemical weapons, facilitating drug smuggling, and destabilising the region.
