Tanzania President Shows Remorse for Cutting Internet Access During Polls

Tanzania’s DODOMA: For the first time since the contentious October election, Tanzania’s president addressed a six-day Internet outage during the nation’s worst post-election violence. On Thursday, President Samia Suluhu Hassan extended “sympathy” to foreign nationals and diplomats residing in the nation, stating that the administration will work to prevent such incidents from happening again.

After candidates from the two major opposition parties were barred from competing and the nation’s top opposition leader remained imprisoned on treason charges, Hassan won the October election with over 97% of the vote.

Rights groups claim that hundreds of people were killed in a severe police crackdown that began on election day and continued for days while the Internet was blocked.Hassan pardoned hundreds of young people who had been arrested, claiming they were acting under peer pressure, and blamed foreigners for the violence.

In an attempt to reassure envoys of their safety, she spoke to ambassadors, high commissioners, and officials of foreign organizations on Thursday in the capital, Dodoma. She stated that the government would remain vigilant to prevent a recurrence of the interruption.
