MAKKAH: Attracting 179 competitors from 32 countries, the 10th International Military Qur’an Memorisation Competition got underway in Makkah on Saturday. Under the sponsorship of Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman, the General Administration of Religious Affairs of the Armed Forces organised the event, which emphasises Saudi Arabia’s role as the custodian of Islam’s holiest sites and in serving the religion’s holy book. It also promotes the importance of the Qur’an and encourages memorisation of it.
There are six categories in the competition: memorising the entire Qur’an; memorising 20 parts, 10 parts, 5 parts, and 3 parts; and a special category for recitation and tajweed (correct pronunciation). A Qur’anic forum for religious affairs directors and imams is one of the parallel events that highlights Saudi Arabia’s efforts in the printing, translation, and dissemination of the Qur’an.
The moral principles of the Qur’an, the Kingdom’s contributions through its ministries, and the influence of tajweed on comprehending the Qur’an are also covered in the forum. Furthermore, the General Administration of Religious Affairs provides religious affairs staff in the military with training programs that emphasise Qur’anic teaching techniques and improve the abilities of competition judges and instructors. The competition supervisor and director of the General Administration of Religious Affairs, Maj. Gen. Mesfer Al-Issa, called the event a major effort to honour the Qur’an.
