The French Foreign Minister is in Kyiv to Express Solidarity

Ukraine’s KYIV: In an unexpected visit on Monday, more than three years after Russia’s invasion, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot reaffirmed France’s support for Ukraine. Barrot met with freshly nominated Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and his colleague Andriy Sybiga.

He landed in Kyiv only hours after Russia launched another round of drone and missile assaults on the Ukrainian capital, the most recent in a string of such attacks. We will succeed in putting an end to this cowardly and shameful war by applying pressure to Russia on the one hand and firmly supporting Ukraine on the other,” Barrot stated.

Shortly after touring the Chernobyl power plant, the scene of the greatest nuclear catastrophe in history, which blasted radioactive clouds over most of Europe in 1986, he was speaking at a news conference.

France promised 10 million euros ($11.7 million) to assist in repairing the cover after Ukraine accused Russia in February of damaging the containment arch that protected the building with an explosive drone.

Barrot toured the building with a small number of media, including AFP, and the hole in the arch was still apparent. While leaving the building with part of his colleagues, Barrot were momentarily trapped in the elevator. However, the group was able to drive the elevator manually and emerged from the incident unscathed.
