WASHINGTON, USA: A senior Trump administration official stated on Sunday that there will be no increased security risk to the US from the scheduled livestream execution of the person responsible for the mass murder of US soldiers.
When asked if it ran the risk of making the offender a martyr for his cause, US Homeland Security chief Markwayne Mullin responded, “I don’t see an elevated risk at this point at all because of this,” on CBS News’ “Face the Nation.
He continued, “I think people need to understand that if you attack America, we will come after you and make sure the punishment fits the crime.” In 2009, Nidal Hasan, a 56-year-old US Army psychiatrist, carried out an Al-Qaeda-inspired attack at a military base in Fort Hood, Texas, that resulted in 13 fatalities and over 30 injuries.
He would be the first person to be put to death by a firing squad used by the US military since 1945. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and the Pentagon first proposed the proposal to publicly broadcast his death by firing squad on December 3 on Thursday, sparking outrage both domestically and internationally.
