RIYADH: The Saudi Arabian Heritage Commission has recognized the JAX District in Diriyah, which is close to Riyadh, as an industrial heritage site.
After leaving its industrial past behind, the area is now recognised as a centre for the creative arts in the centre of Diriyah, home to the At-Turaif UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Industrial Heritage Preservation Programme seeks to preserve and honour historically important locations to the Kingdom’s industrial sector. Official acknowledgment of its previous role falls under this program’s objectives.
According to officials, the district’s distinctive industrial architecture is highlighted by the designation, which also places it alongside other locations in the Kingdom that are acknowledged for their contributions to the development of Saudi industry and Saudi society. They added that being designated as a heritage site highlights its significance as a national cultural landmark and honours its past as a hub for major industrial projects.
JAX, named for the company that created the district in the 1970s, is home to an impressive collection of massive warehouses formerly a major industrial hub in the Riyadh area.
