JEDDAH: On Friday, Saudi King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman greeted Senegal’s President Bassirou Diomaye Faye on his country’s independence day.
In a cable, King Salman congratulated the president “continued good health and happiness,” as well as Senegal’s administration and people for “steady progress and prosperity.” The Saudi Press Agency stated that the crown prince made a similar comment.
The west African country celebrates its independence every year on April 4, the day it signed a transfer of power deal with France in 1960 to form the Mali Federation with French Sudan. The union, however, was short-lived, as the two broke ways in August of the same year, with the former French Sudan becoming the Republic of Mali.
Senegal and neighbouring Gambia founded the Confederation of Senegambia in early 1982, but it was disbanded in 1989 since the integration was never completed. The current president, Faye, was an opposition candidate who gained to power after defeating incumbent President Macky Sall in the March 2024 election.
