During his second state visit to the UK, US President Donald Trump suggested that Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer could even use the military to stop illegal migration. Speaking at a joint press conference, Trump said he had discussed the issue with Sir Keir during their meeting at Chequers, the prime minister’s country residence.
Trump explained that just as the US faces problems at its southern border, the UK is struggling with migrants crossing the English Channel in small boats. “You have people coming in and I told the prime minister I would stop it,” he said. “It doesn’t matter if you call out the military, it doesn’t matter what means you use.”
Later, in an interview with Fox News, the president called on Sir Keir to take a “strong stand” against immigration, arguing that it was politically damaging for him. Trump also warned that illegal immigration “destroys countries from within,” highlighting his own administration’s tougher deportation policies since his return to the White House in January.
The two-day visit combined political talks with a display of royal ceremony. Trump was hosted by King Charles and the Royal Family at Windsor Castle and attended a state banquet on Wednesday. On Thursday, he held detailed discussions with Sir Keir before addressing journalists together. Shortly after the press conference, the president and First Lady Melania Trump departed Stansted Airport aboard Air Force One.
