UNITED NATIONS: The Slovenian mission announced Tuesday that the UN Security Council will visit Syria and Lebanon next week as it prepares to chair the council beginning in December. The ambassadors of 15 member states are scheduled to visit Damascus on December 4, a few days before the one-year anniversary of Syria’s longstanding dictator Bashar Assad’s downfall.
According to the mission, the diplomats would meet with new authorities, including President Ahmed Al-Sharaa. As the United Nations strives to restore itself in Syria, the Security Council recently eased sanctions on former terrorist Al-Sharaa, urging him to facilitate an inclusive transition.
On December 5, Security Council officials will travel to Beirut to meet with peacekeepers from the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), which will depart the country by the end of 2027 after serving as a buffer between Lebanon and Israel since 1978.
The visit comes as Lebanon accuses Israel of breaking the November 2024 ceasefire agreement, which intended to end more than a year of warfare with Hezbollah by continuing its strikes and maintaining forces on Lebanese territory.
