UN Sounds Alarm: Intensifying Racial Discrimination Against Palestinians in the West Bank

New York City: The “asphyxiating impact” of Israeli laws, policies, and practices on almost every facet of Palestinian life in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, is described in a UN Human Rights Office study released on Wednesday. It issues a warning that Israel is breaking international law’s requirements for states to forbid and end apartheid and racial segregation.

Although systemic discrimination against Palestinians in the region has been a “long-standing concern, the report points out that things have significantly gotten worse since at least December 2022. It provides numerous examples of how Palestinians’ everyday life have become more restricted and unstable.

It claims that Israeli authorities treat Palestinians living in the West Bank and Israeli settlers under two different sets of laws and policies, which leads to unfair treatment on a number of important problems, such as mobility and access to resources like land and water.

Palestinians still face widespread land theft and resource denial. Along with other forms of systematic discrimination, such as criminal prosecution in military courts where their rights to due process and a fair trial are routinely disregarded, this has resulted in the dispossession of their homes and lands.
