RIYADH: On Tuesday, Democratic US Senator Chris Murphy said that the Department of Defence wouldn’t let him visit a key military base in Qatar while he was in the Middle East. He said that this was done to hide the effects of the war with Iran by the US government.
Iran has attacked the Al Udeid Air Base many times during the war that the US and Israel started in February. It is the biggest US base in the area. The second stop on Murphy’s trip was Riyadh. He told a group of reporters there, “This trip confirmed for me that there is an active, unprecedented, unconstitutional effort underway to hide the costs of this war and the implications of this war from Congress and the American people.”
Some of President Donald Trump’s Republicans are among the lawmakers who have been asking his government to give them more information about the war’s cost, strategy, and casualties. When asked for comment, a senior Pentagon official said that Murphy’s office had been told before his trip that the department would not be helping him get to the base. This was because of an order from Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth on March 3, 2026, which limited travel to the area.
