What the Second Month of War Means for Security in Lebanon

BEIRUT: As the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah intensifies, the Lebanese army has evacuated numerous border posts in southern Lebanon, a move that an official has characterized as essential to avoid clashes with Israeli forces and to avert heavy casualties.

According to military and other government sources in Lebanon, the redeployments took place on Wednesday as a result of Israeli bombardment near army positions and repeated calls for Lebanese troops to evacuate specific locations. Israel has called on military units stationed in the south to evacuate,” a source informed Arab News. “After refusing to evacuate, one army checkpoint was shelled by Israeli forces, killing soldiers.”

The Lebanese army stated that the pullout was done to avoid surrounding or isolating units in the case of a larger Israeli ground invasion. This would have prevented soldiers from being separated from command and supply lines.

According to Arab News, Maj. Gen. Abdul Rahman Shuhaitli stated that the military leadership was concerned that troops would become trapped and practically be controlled by Israel if they were unable to communicate with their superiors. Once the soldiers’ communication with their superiors is cut off, it becomes extremely difficult to foretell the consequences once they are essentially held captive,” he stated.
