BEIRUT: After announcing further progress in negotiations in Beirut, US envoy Amos Hochstein announced he will visit Israel on Wednesday in an attempt to negotiate a ceasefire that would end the war with Lebanon’s Hezbollah group.
After Hezbollah and the Lebanese government agreed to a US ceasefire plan, albeit with some reservations, Hochstein, who had arrived in Beirut the day before, stated he saw a “real opportunity” to stop the fight.
Following his second meeting with Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, who has been endorsed by Iran-backed Hezbollah to engage in negotiations, Hochstein stated, “The meeting today built on the meeting yesterday, and made additional progress.”
The goal of the diplomacy is to put an end to the conflict that has caused enormous destruction in Lebanon since Israel launched an offensive against Hezbollah in September, sending troops and conducting bombings over large swaths of the nation.
Tens of thousands of people were evacuated from Israel’s north owing to rocket assaults by Hezbollah, which commenced fire in support of Hamas at the beginning of the Gaza war in October 2023. Israel claims that its goal is to ensure that these individuals return home.
