Customers have been cautioned by the Saudi Banks Media and Awareness Committee not to fall for scammers who pose as popular people or humanitarian organizations to obtain financial aid via instant messaging apps or social media platforms.
According to the committee, these scammers deceive victims into thinking they are from legitimate organizations by using phoney seals and documents to persuade them to pay money to receive aid. It was emphasized that government agencies do not use these websites and services to advertise or find recipients of gifts.
“Fraudsters are looking for all ways to attract people, by deluding victims into believing that they are entitled to donations or support from these well-known charitable institutions that they claim to be responsible for, or by exploiting the names of legal entities that provide support and assistance and that the person must pay some fees by transferring money or paying fees through links to complete the rest of the procedures,” it continued.
According to Rabah Al-Shemaisi, secretary general of the Saudi Banks Media and Awareness Committee, the committee advises against replying to anyone requesting money or fees to get a gift or a particular service. She stated that the number of these fraud instances the committee has received has increased.
