Russia orders Poland to close its consulate in Saint Petersburg

Russia orders Poland to close its consulate in Saint Petersburg

Following a tit-for-tat order from Russia, Poland said on Wednesday that it had closed its consulate in Saint Petersburg, Russia.
Russia ordered the closure in December after Poland, accusing Moscow of “sabotage” attempts in Poland and its allies, announced in October that it was closing Russia’s consulate in the Polish city of Poznan. After Russia withdrew its approval of the Polish post’s operations, the Polish Consulate General in Saint Petersburg was closed, Poland’s foreign ministry announced in a statement on Wednesday.

It is reprisal for the Polish foreign minister’s decision to shut down Russia’s consulate general in Poznan following sabotage incidents on Polish soil that were connected to Russian officials.
When Russia ordered the closure, Poland retaliated by saying that if “terrorism,  which it attributed to Moscow, continued, it would close all of the Russian consulates on its territory. Since Moscow moved soldiers into Ukraine in February 2022, tensions between Russia and NATO member Poland have increased, and both countries have expelled scores of officials.

Since the crisis started, Poland, a firm friend of Kyiv, has served as a crucial transit hub for Western weapons bound for the beleaguered nation.
In 2023, Poland found 14 Russian, Belarusian, and Ukrainian people guilty of planning sabotage for Moscow as part of a spy ring in one of the biggest espionage trials.
