From Dabke to Digital: The Ways in Which South Koreans Support Palestine

SEOUL: As the solidarity movement rapidly expands, activists are outdoing one another in terms of artistic expression, from one-man protests to large-scale rallies, plays, and writing. Although there has been Palestinian advocacy in South Korea for many years, it has never been as well-known as it is today. Only a small number of activists were participating, but it started to acquire considerable traction after the US invasion of Iraq in 2003.

At the time, mobilisation was challenging. We typically had five members, but occasionally we had just two,” Deng Ya-ping, the head of BDS Korea, an organisation connected to the international Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions campaign, told Arab News. In the past, civil society organisations in Korea would convene to condemn Israel, but only in reaction to specific events. “The groups would resume promoting their own agendas after the situation was resolved,” Deng stated.

“However, so many groups — to new magnitudes — have been working together to show solidarity now that the massacre and genocide have been occurring for the past 15 months and are getting serious.” Beginning as marches in downtown Seoul, it quickly developed into a comprehensive awareness campaign as Israel’s response to the October 2023 attack by the Palestinian organisation Hamas reached a genocidal level.
