Saudi Arabia Taps Sukuk Market for $2.54 Billion in August

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia raised SR9.52 billion ($2.54 billion) with its August sukuk offering, a 77.94 percent increase over July, as the Kingdom expanded its domestic debt market. In a news release, the National Debt Management Centre stated that the issuance was divided into five tranches with maturities ranging from 2031 to 2041.

The latest offering comes as Saudi Arabia continues to seek debt financing to support its Vision 2030 economic diversification goal. The plan enables the Kingdom to preserve budgetary flexibility by combining domestic and international borrowing. STP Partners’ CEO, Tony Hallside, stated, “The increase in Saudi Arabia’s August sukuk allocation reflects the continued momentum and growing depth of the Kingdom’s domestic debt market.”

He added: “While the 77.94 percent month-on-month increase is noteworthy, the structure of the issuance is also significant. Spread across five tranches maturing between 2031 and 2041, it gives lenders access to a broader range of maturities and helps develop the local yield curve.

Sukuk are Shariah-compliant investment vehicles that provide investors with partial ownership of underlying assets, making them a popular alternative to traditional bonds. Unlike conventional bonds, sukuk are designed to adhere to Shariah standards and do not require traditional interest payments.
