WARSAW: Some ruling lawmakers accused Poland’s nationalist presidential candidate Karol Nawrocki of meddling in the election after he claimed to have had a “important” encounter with US President Donald Trump at the White House on Friday. Nawrocki, who is polling second two weeks before the May 18 referendum, has the support of departing President Andrzej Duda and the right-wing opposition party Law and Justice (PiS).
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s Civic Coalition (KO) supports the front-runner, pro-European Warsaw Mayor Rafal Trzaskowski. On his Facebook page, Nawrocki posted, “A very significant meeting… with US President D. Trump at the White House and joint talks on the strategic alliance as well as future cooperation.” He shared pictures of the two guys posing in the White House during the Thursday visit, along with a campaign hashtag.
“President Donald J. Trump welcomes Polish presidential candidate Karol Nawrocki to the Oval Office,” the White House wrote alongside the images on X. In an interview with TV Republika, Nawrocki stated that “President Trump said, ‘You will win.’… I saw that as his hope for me to win the next elections. On Friday, some ruling coalition MPs criticised the meeting on X.
Trump was accused by MP Roman Giertych of “brazenly interfering in the elections in Poland” and of being a “friend” of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
