President Donald Trump on Saturday escalated his threats to deploy National Guard troops and immigration agents to Chicago, posting a parody image inspired by the film Apocalypse Now. The image depicted helicopters flying over flames with the caption: “I love the smell of deportations in the morning. Chicago is about to find out why it’s called the Department of WAR.”
The post, labeled “Chipocalypse Now,” referenced the 1979 Vietnam War film in which Robert Duvall’s character famously says, “I love the smell of napalm in the morning.” Trump also appeared in the illustration, wearing a hat resembling Duvall’s character, Lt. Col. Kilgore, against a backdrop of the Chicago skyline. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker sharply criticized the move, calling Trump a “wannabe dictator.
On Friday, Trump signed an executive order seeking to rename the Pentagon as the Department of War, though such a change requires congressional approval. His remarks come as his administration intensifies immigration enforcement in Democratic-led cities, including Los Angeles and Washington, with Chicago now in focus.
He has previously implied that New Orleans and Baltimore would receive the same treatment. On Friday, he even alluded to federal agents potentially travelling to Portland, Oregon, to “wipe ‘em out,” that is, demonstrators. He could have been misrepresenting footage of protests that took place in that city years ago.
