Why Saudi Arabia and France Support a Unified Palestinian Authority

Saudi Arabia and France, as co-chairs of the High-Level International Conference on the Peaceful Settlement of the Palestinian Question, announced their joint support on Monday for deploying a temporary international stabilization mission in Palestinian territories. They also backed the establishment of a unified Palestinian authority governing both Gaza and the West Bank.

The joint statement, released after the New York conference at the United Nations, stressed reinforcing Palestinian police and security institutions through existing international programs such as the U.S. Security Coordinator mission, the European Union Police Mission, and the EU Border Assistance Mission for Rafah.

Riyadh and Paris welcomed the Palestinian Authority’s “one state, one government, one law, and one weapon” approach, which seeks to end Hamas’ control in Gaza. They called for Hamas to disarm and transfer all weapons to the Palestinian Authority under international supervision.

The conference produced the “New York Declaration endorsed by 142 UN member states, reaffirming that the two-state solution is the only irreversible path to peace and long-term stability in the Middle East.

This declaration comes as the crisis in Gaza deepens, with Israel intensifying its ground operations in Gaza City. Against this backdrop the joint communique demanded a permanent ceasefire the safe release of hostages, prisoner exchanges, unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid, and a complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza.
